Heavy downpours, gusty winds expected for parts of SE Texas today

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — We’ll see increased rain chances today as moisture from a disturbance in the western Gulf of Mexico rolls in.

That disturbance has a 40% chance of development through the next 48 hours, ABC13 meteorologist Elita Loresca says.

Whether it develops or not, it appears its moisture is headed our way and that means we’ll see slow moving thunderstorms with at least isolated instances of flooding.

Winds could gust near 40 mph late tonight through early Saturday morning. Further, we’ll need to monitor for potential minor coastal flooding as those onshore winds elevate the seas and tide.

Because the ground is super saturated, even an inch of rain could cause some street flooding issues. Drivers should use caution over the next few days.

Any chance the system stalls when it gets here?

The one model that forecasted weak development says it doesn’t stall but with us potentially being on the dirty side, moisture may linger over us well into the weekend.

What weather can we expect over the weekend?

Saturday could be another stormy day with a 70% chance of slow-moving, heavy thunderstorms. These storms could drop a quick 1-3″ of rain, leading to localized street flooding issues. Additional downpours are possible Sunday, but drier air will start to move in keeping the rain chance down to 40%. It won’t rain the entire weekend, but showers and storms will be possible anytime. Temperatures will start in the upper 60s and warm into the low 80s both days.
