17-year-old drowns in Joe Pool Lake, Grand Prairie officials say

A teenager drowned Friday evening at Joe Pool Lake, Grand Prairie authorities said.

The Grand Prairie Fire Department was called around 6:10 p.m. about the possible drowning of a 17-year-old boy who had gone underwater while swimming near the beach and had not resurfaced.

Divers found the teen after he’d been underwater about half an hour. He was not wearing a life vest.

The teen was taken to Medical City Arlington Hospital and pronounced dead. The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office identified him as Elijah Cooper of Grand Prairie.

The Fire Department urged people to wear life vests or other flotation devices when they go swimming.
