Hurst officer shoots, wounds man who fired gun at police near Tarrant County College, authorities say

A Hurst officer shot a man who was firing a handgun at police Wednesday afternoon near Tarrant County College, authorities say.

The man was wounded and taken to a hospital, Hurst police said. The officer was not injured.

North Richland Hills police initially responded to a call just before 5 p.m. about a man firing a gun at the Station 121 at Town Center apartments, which straddle the Hurst-North Richland Hills city line.

Another 911 caller then reported that the man was on the Hurst side of the apartment complex and was breaking car windows with a gun in his hand, Hurst police said, so Hurst officers also were dispatched to the apartments.

When a Hurst officer located the man in a parking lot in the 1600 block of Campus Drive, the man began firing his handgun at the officer, police said.

The officer returned fire, striking the man.

The man, whose name was not released, was taken into custody and taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. His condition was not available.

North Richland Hills police said they found evidence that someone had fired into an unoccupied vehicle.

The Texas Rangers will investigate the incident.
