Man in custody after leading police on hourlong chase from Garland to McKinney

Garland police arrested a man who led authorities on an hourlong chase across Dallas and Collin counties Thursday afternoon.

Police said that agents with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration asked Garland officers to help perform a traffic stop on a gray pickup about 3:30 p.m. When police attempted to stop the truck near North Jupiter Road and West Walnut Street, the driver fled.

Officers pursued the pickup through Garland and into Rowlett, Dallas, Richardson, Plano, Allen and McKinney.

Authorities were able to use spike strips to blow out two of the truck’s tires, and the driver eventually stopped in the 2900 block of County Road 330 in McKinney.

The driver got out of the pickup with his hands raised and appeared to be gesturing to authorities before a state trooper tackled him about 4:30 p.m.

Police said the man, identified as 41-year-old Rodolfo Gutierrez Tapia, was taken to a hospital for evaluation because he told officers that he had swallowed drugs.

Gutierrez faces a charge of evading arrest, and authorities are continuing to investigate.

Police did not say why the DEA was seeking Gutierrez.
