Woman’s body found after her car was trapped in rushing water, Garland police say

Garland fire and police crews have recovered the body of a woman whose car became trapped in water early Sunday, authorities say.

Crews had responded to the 1700 block of Holford Road after a Nissan Altima was surrounded by water about 2:15 a.m.

Police said that when Garland firefighters arrived, the vehicle, which had been swept into the creek, was trapped at the north end of a bridge.

Crews were unable to reach the car because of the speed and depth of the water, police said.

The vehicle was recovered about 300 yards downstream about 7 a.m., but there was no one inside. Police said they thought one person had been inside the car.

The body of a woman was found Sunday afternoon, and Garland police confirmed she had been the driver of the car.

The Dallas County medical examiner’s office identified her Monday as Rita Jo Vinson, 49, of Greenville.

A flash flood watch was issued Sunday for parts of North Texas, including Dallas and Tarrant counties, from early Monday until 7 p.m.
