Dallas County reports 2 coronavirus deaths, 114 cases; Tarrant County adds 208 cases

Dallas County reported two more COVID-19 deaths and 114 new coronavirus cases Thursday.

The latest victims were a man in his 50s and a woman in her 90s, both from Dallas. Both had underlying high-risk health conditions.

County Judge Clay Jenkins said in a written statement that 91% of COVID-19 cases in Dallas County were in people who were not fully vaccinated.

“New COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations and deaths are almost completely preventable now with the vaccine,” Jenkins said. “Please consider getting vaccinated today.”

Of the new cases, 82 were confirmed and 32 were probable. The numbers bring the county’s overall case total to 305,854, including 262,527 confirmed and 43,327 probable. The death toll is 4,119.

Health officials have been warning people about the risk of “variants of concern,” particularly the delta variant, which was first identified in India.

Last week, President Joe Biden also spoke about the risk of the delta variant, especially for people who are not vaccinated. The Biden administration recently announced that it would not reach its goal of having 70% of eligible people nationwide receive at least one vaccine dose by July 4.

Dr. James Cutrell, an infectious disease expert at UT Southwestern, told The Dallas Morning News on Monday that both doses of the two-dose COVID-19 vaccines would offer 88% to 90% protection against the delta variant.

According to the state, 1,243,101 people in Dallas County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 1,046,269 — 48.0% of the county’s population 12 and older — are fully vaccinated.
