Man arrested after fatal shooting of 18-year-old during gun sale in west Oak Cliff

An 18-year-old died Monday night after a shooting in west Oak Cliff, Dallas police said, and another man is in custody.

Officers were called just after 9 p.m. to a shooting in the 500 block of Cold Town Lane, near South Walton Walker Boulevard and Loop 12.

The victim, identified as Michael Contreras Kelly, was taken to a hospital, where he died.

A witness told police that Contreras was meeting with two people to sell a gun, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. After Nicholas Shykeem Levels, 21, took the firearm from Contreras, the other person shot him, the affidavit says.

The pair then drove off, police said, but Levels went to Parkland Memorial Hospital a short time later with a gunshot wound.

Levels was taken to police headquarters and interviewed but refused to identify the gunman, police said. He was booked into the Dallas County jail on a capital murder charge Tuesday morning.

His bail had not been set, and he did not have an attorney listed in court records.

Anyone with information about the incident may contact Detective Christopher Anderson at 214-671-3616 or c.anderson@dallascityhall.com and refer to case No. 114781-2021.

Crime Stoppers will pay a reward of up to $5,000 for information that leads to an arrest and indictment in the case. Tips may be submitted by calling 214-373-8477.
