Finner said his officers tried to detain a Hispanic male in his 30’s, but the suspect refused and instead got into a brawl with one of the officers.
In the video above, HPD Chief Troy Finner explains what lead to a man’s shooting death in southeast Houston. Police said they were responding to a disturbance call, when the man e”The suspect tried to disarm the officer. At some point, that officers’ gun was discharged. The officer and suspect continued to struggle. The officers kept giving commands to stop, but the suspect didn’t obey. As they were struggling with the gun, a second officer feared for the officer’s life and discharged striking the suspect. Unfortunately, the suspect is deceased,” said Finner.
During the struggle, police said a second male relative tried to impede the arrest and was also in the struggle. When the first suspect was shot, the second man ran away from the scene. Investigators set up a large perimeter around Reveille Street and called in K-9 units and the helicopter.
The man who fled was eventually found still hiding at the apartment complex. Police did not say what the relationship was between the woman and the male relative who was killed.
The officer who opened fire will remain on administrative duty per protocol during an internal affairs investigation.
