2 dead, 1 injured following shooting at Downtown Aquarium in Houston, police say

Two men are dead following a shooting that occurred Thursday evening at the Downtown Aquarium in Houston, according to police.

Police said one of the two people who were found fatally shot near the bar of a restaurant located on the second floor of the aquarium is believed to be the lone suspect. The aquarium is located on the 400 block of Bagby Street in downtown Houston.

A third person, a woman who was dining with a victim of the shooting, was also injured by gunfire during the incident and taken to a hospital, police said, and added that she is believed to be in stable condition.

During a news conference regarding the shooting, Houston Police Executive Chief Matt Slinkard said video footage of the incident showed that the man and the woman were finishing a meal and getting ready to close out a tab when the suspect approached and began shooting. The suspect then turned turned the gun on himself, Slinkard said.

Slinkard said police do not know whether or not the three people knew each other, but added that the investigation is still in its early stages.

“It appears that the male and female on one end of the bar were not with this suspect. The suspect was sitting at the other end of the bar,” he said.

Police were notified of the shooting around 8:10 p.m., Slinkard said. He said police are still trying to find witnesses of the shooting, but did not say how many people were inside the restaurant at the time of the incident.

“This is a horribly tragic incident,” Slinkard said. “And this is the type of situation that should make us all pause, send out as many prayers as we can for all of the families and all of the lives that will be affected by a tragic incident like this.”
