A few more storms today, better rain chances next week

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Rain chances are a bit higher today than in previous days as deeper moisture blows in from the Gulf of Mexico.

Temperatures are starting off warm today, with most locations in the upper 70s this morning. We’re also seeing a few scattered downpours southwest of Houston. Temperatures will heat up into the low 90s before additional thunderstorms start to develop over and near Houston. Those that do get a storm could get a quick inch of rain along with frequent rumbles of thunder. Any storm that pops up should fizzle after the sun sets.

What are my chances for rain Friday?
Friday’s rain chance for Houston is 40%, but there’s an even better chance of rain southwest of Houston toward Matagorda Bay. That’s because deeper tropical moisture from a trough of low pressure will blow into the middle Texas coastline. It won’t take us much heat to get the storms going, so temperatures will peak early in the mid 90s then cool into the 80s and even 70s where it rains heavily.

What are we expecting this weekend?

More heat! A few afternoon downpours are possible Saturday, but a heat dome should squash the clouds and rain chance Sunday down to 20%. This will send high temperatures back toward 100-degrees.

When will the next summer front impact us?
At this time it appears the front will impact us after the weekend, approaching Monday night and arriving on Tuesday. The timing could shift a day earlier or later, but when it does arrive, widely scattered downpours are possible followed by below “normal” temps with highs in the low 90s and lows in the low 70s.
