Person fatally shot at downtown homeless encampment, Dallas police say

A person was fatally shot Saturday night at a downtown homeless encampment and the shooter remains at large, Dallas police say.

Dallas Fire-Rescue responded about 10:10 p.m. to the camp in the 500 block of Park Avenue, near Canton Street and Cesar Chavez Boulevard, and the victim was pronounced dead at a hospital.

A silver sedan was seen driving west from the scene on Marilla Street after the shooting, police said.

The victim’s name was not released, and police said the Dallas County medical examiner would be working to identify the person through fingerprints.

Police, who described the victim as transgender but did not say whether the person was a man or woman, did not indicate that a hate crime was suspected.

The department said the motive for the shooting was unclear and declined to release further details.
