Governor not required to quit two years prior to poll: Chaudhry Sarwar

LAHORE: Governor Chaudhry Sarwar has claimed there are precedents of court orders that do not require a governor to resign from the office two years prior to the general elections.

“I am fulfilling my responsibilities as the governor, and will decide my election strategy as per the party’s discipline when the general elections will be announced,” he said.

The governor had recently announced that he wanted to participate in the next general election to take part in “active politics” in the country.

Mr Sarwar was speaking to the media persons after inaugurating the drive to plant 1,000 trees, in collaboration with Dawat-i-Islami, at the Governor House here on Monday.

Members of Dawat-i-Islami Majlis-i-Shura Haji Jaffar, Mohammad Usman Attari, Nadeem Attari, Iqbal Attari and Liaqat Attari were present on the occasion.

Answering the media persons’ questions, he said he would participate in next elections.

Referring to Lahore and Peshawar high courts verdict stating that governor’s post was not a part of “Services of Pakistan”, he said it was not necessary for a governor to resign from his post two years prior to his tenure’s completion. He said he would continue to fulfill his responsibilities as Punjab governor.

Answering a question about the elections, he said the PTI government was inviting the opposition to a dialogue to ensure transparency in the next poll but its (opposition’s) attitude was “not democratic”.

The opposition should negotiate with the government on election reforms so that the process could be made transparent and no one could point fingers on it.

He said as far as religious parties were concerned, it was up to the people, who elect them, adding that be it Maulana Fazlur Rehman or any other religious party leader, they could only be elected through the public votes.

He lauded the Dawat-i-Islami leadership for launching the tree-planting drive, planting almost 2.6 million saplings across Pakistan.

He urged the people to participate in the drive to realise the dream of clean and green Pakistan.
