Richardson will spray for mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus this week

Richardson will spray two areas on both Tuesday and Wednesday night after mosquito samples found in traps tested positive for the West Nile virus, the city said in a news release.

The first spraying location in Richardson is an area bordered to the north by Arapaho Road and running south to Spring Valley Road and to the west by Coit Road running east to Cottonwood Creek. The second location is near the city limits between Shiloh Road and running east to Rowlett Creek.

Spraying is scheduled to begin after 9 p.m. and end by 4:30 a.m. both Tuesday and Wednesday, the city said.

It also sprayed last Tuesday and Wednesday, according to the interactive map the city uses to keep residents updated on West Nile test results and any actions taken, such as draining a pool or spraying.

West Nile virus is transmitted through a bite from an infected mosquito carrying the virus, though not all mosquitoes are capable of carrying or transmitting the disease, the city says. Not everyone who gets bitten by an infected mosquito will get the virus, and it’s rare for people to develop life-threatening symptoms from the disease.

The city included the following safety measures to help protect oneself from contracting West Nile virus:

  • Drain standing water around your home.
  • Use insect repellent containing DEET.
  • Avoid being outdoors during dusk and dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
  • Dress to protect yourself with long sleeves and pants to reduce skin exposure

About 8 out of 10 people who contract West Nile virus won’t experience any symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Those who do may experience a variety of symptoms, including fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash.
