12-year-old Tarrant County girl dies from fentanyl toxicity, autopsy shows

A 12-year-old Tarrant County girl died in May from fentanyl toxicity, the Tarrant County medical examiner’s office ruled Friday.

The girl, who has been identified as Ellianna Martinez, was from Richland Hills, according to records from the medical examiner’s office. The manner of death has not yet been released, according the medical examiner’s office.

Fentanyl is a narcotic that is prescribed to treat severe pain and has a high risk for addiction and dependence, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. It is 80 to 100 times stronger than morphine and can suppress breathing.

She died in the early morning hours of May 31 in the emergency room at Medical City North Hills hospital in North Richland Hills, the medical examiners records show.

Ellianna is one of the youngest victims of fentanyl in Tarrant County, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

In an email to the Star-Telegram Friday, Richland Hills police Capt. Sheena McEachran said that Ellianna’s death is still under investigation.

No arrests have been made in connection to her death. No other details were available Friday.
