Garland libraries will no longer charge late fees for overdue books

Starting this Friday, Garland public libraries will no longer charge readers late fees on any materials returned after their due date.

The library will still charge users for lost or damaged items, including the replacement cost and a $5 processing fee.

This new policy comes after the library examined ways to reduce or eliminate barriers to public library access within the Garland community.

“We want everyone to feel welcome to come into our libraries,” library director Karen Archibald said in a news release.

“The financial hardship of library fines can deter someone from returning to the library. By eliminating those fines, we’re able to really begin breaking down a barrier that keeps some people from using their library.”

Library staff members still ask patrons to be considerate to their neighbors and to return borrowed items as soon as they’re able.

“There’s no shame and no judgment. Just bring your materials back,” Archibald said.
