Allen police identify woman killed in officer-involved shooting, man wounded while arguing with her

The Allen Police Department has identified a woman who died Monday during an officer-involved shooting, as well as a man who was critically wounded.

Gloria Marie Strong, 27, died at a hospital after the shooting in a Wendy’s parking lot at West McDermott Drive near U.S. Highway 75. Michael Anthony Cooper, 24, was in intensive care Tuesday after undergoing surgery.

Police have said that an officer fired at Strong while she was carrying a rifle, but they have not determined whose gunfire killed her.

She had been arguing with Cooper and wounded him after shooting at him several times. Witnesses also reported that someone had a handgun at the scene before police arrived.

Strong and Cooper knew each other, but Officer Sam Rippamonti said the reason for their argument had not been determined.

Following the confrontation between Strong and Cooper, an Allen officer fired at her. The police department has not released the identity of the officer who was involved but said he has been placed on administrative leave, which is routine in shootings involving law enforcement.

Officers had responded to reports of the argument about 2:30 p.m., and police confirmed Tuesday that Cooper and Strong were both armed.

In the Wendy’s parking lot, in the 600 block of West McDermott Drive, police found Strong holding a rifle at her side and immediately heard several gunshots, Sgt. Jonathan Maness said.

Strong, who was still holding the rifle, began to run east, authorities said. An officer shot at her at least once, but it was unclear whether that gunfire struck her. Officers then found Cooper lying wounded between two vehicles and Strong collapsed several feet away.

Because an officer discharged his weapon, Texas Rangers are assisting with the investigation.

Sgt. Kyle Bradford, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, said the Rangers were unable to provide more details Tuesday.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about it can contact Allen police at 214-509-4200.
