Denton police officer arrested on charge of domestic-violence assault

A Denton police officer has been placed on leave after his arrest Wednesday on a domestic-violence charge.

Aubrey police took Daniel James Neighbors into custody on charges of assault — family violence and interference with an emergency request for assistance, according to the Denton department. Both charges are misdemeanors.

Officers were called to a home in the 300 block of Countryside Drive and determined that Neighbors, 40, had assaulted a woman at the home they share, Aubrey police said. He had left the home but returned shortly after police arrived.

Police did not describe the relationship between Neighbors and the woman.

Neighbors was being held in the Denton County jail Wednesday evening, and his bail had not been set, jail records showed. It was unclear whether he had an attorney.

Denton police said Neighbors was placed on administrative leave while the criminal investigation and an internal investigation are conducted.

Neighbors has been assigned to the department’s patrol division all nine years he has worked there. His LinkedIn profile indicates that he previously worked for the DART police.
