Health officials report 19 deaths from COVID-19 in Arlington this week, plus other updates

The number of Arlington residents hospitalized for COVID-19 dropped for the first time in several weeks.

As of Sept. 27, 144 people were hospitalized with the virus, down from 179 one week ago, according to the city’s dashboard.

In the past week, the city has recorded 19 deaths from COVID-19. Since the pandemic began, it has reported 807 total deaths from the virus.

In Tarrant County, a total of 928 people were hospitalized with the virus, down from 1,179 last week, according to the county’s health department.

New admissions for coronavirus are declining in the four most populous North Texas counties, according to the latest forecast from UT Southwestern Medical Center.

The number of hospitalizations in Dallas County is expected to fall steeply, to about 600 by mid-October. Currently, 765 people are hospitalized for COVID-19 in the county.

Tarrant County hospitalizations, which have been higher than Dallas County’s recently, are predicted to drop to 800 by mid-October.

Arlington has recorded 56,721 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, according to the Tarrant County Public Health Department. Of those, 51,717 have recovered.

The numbers bring the county’s case total to 343,828, including 285,464 confirmed and 58,364 probable. The death toll is 4,247.

According to the state, 1,156,419 people in Tarrant County have received at least one dose of a coronavirus vaccine, while 1,014,320 — 58.3 percent of the county’s population 12 and older — are fully vaccinated. The state also reported 25,940 people in Tarrant County have received a third dose of the vaccine since Aug. 13.

Education

So far this school year, Arlington ISD has reported that 2,565 students and 400 staff members have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the district’s dashboard. Of those, 39 cases are active.

Masks are optional this year.

The district has established a student counseling services hotline. Students can call 682-867-9416 to be connected with school counselors to discuss stress, anxiety or other issues. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Parents can call 682-867-9417 to talk with district staff members who can help find resources such as food, clothing, shelter and transportation.

The University of Texas at Arlington has had 830 total positive coronavirus cases since March 2020.
