Health officials report 11 COVID-19 related deaths in Grand Prairie this week; plus other updates

Eleven Grand Prairie residents died in the past week from COVID-19, according to the city and public health department.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Grand Prairie has reached 28,994 since the pandemic began last year, an increase of 794 over last week.

Grand Prairie has recorded a total of 308 deaths COVID-related deaths since the pandemic began, according to the city’s dashboard. Deaths this week included a woman in her 30s, a woman in her 60s and man in his 40s, all with underlying health conditions, according to the Dallas County Health Department.

New admissions for coronavirus are declining in the four most populous North Texas counties, the latest forecast from UT Southwestern Medical Center says.

The number of hospitalizations in Dallas County is expected to fall steeply, to about 600 by mid-October. Currently, 765 people are hospitalized for COVID-19 in the county.

Tarrant County hospitalizations, which have been higher than Dallas County’s recently, are predicted to drop to 800 by mid-October. Currently, 928 people are hospitalized for the disease in Tarrant County.

Grand Prairie is mostly in Dallas and Tarrant counties, with a small portion in Ellis County. Dallas County updates case numbers for cities Tuesday and Friday and does not report which cases are considered active or recovered.

Schools

Since returning to school on Aug. 11, 917 students and 233 staff have tested positive for COVID-19, according to the district’s dashboard.

Of those cases, 137 students and 33 staff have active cases.

The district implemented numerous COVID-19 protocols, including frequent classroom cleanings to health assessments. Masks are optional.

As the economic ramifications of the pandemic continue to take a toll on many Grand Prairie residents and businesses, the city is also offering residents several options for relief.
