2 teens in custody after leading officers on 10-city car chase, Carrollton police say

Two teens are in custody after leading officers on a car chase through 10 North Texas cities Friday afternoon, Carrollton police said.

The chase started around 1:10 p.m. in the 3300 block of Interstate 35E in Carrollton after 17-year-old Giovanni Hernandez refused to pull over for a traffic stop, police said.

Police said officers had wanted to pull the blue Honda sedan over because they believed it had been used in a drive-by shooting Monday in the 3000 block of Cemetery Hill Road in Carrollton. No one was injured in that incident, police said.

Friday’s chase lasted about 45 minutes, police said. Officers pursued the car through The Colony, Frisco, McKinney, Allen, Plano, Richardson, Dallas, Addison and Farmers Branch before he surrendered at the intersection of South Josey Lane and Crosby Road in Carrollton, police said.

No one was injured and no property was damaged during the chase, police said. Two schools near Josey and Crosby — R.L. Turner High and Central Elementary — were briefly put on lockdown as a precaution after the pursuit.

Hernandez and a 16-year-old female passenger were taken into custody, police said. Officers found a stolen gun inside the car, they said.

Numerous agencies helped out in the pursuit, Carrollton police said.

“The Carrollton Police Department sends its deep gratitude to The Texas Department of Public Safety for the vital helicopter support and to the many police departments that helped along the way,” the department said Friday in a written statement.
