Storms move in overnight ahead of a weak front

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Moisture moved back in Sunday bringing back the muggy and humid conditions.

A weakening cool front is expected to move in overnight into Monday morning bringing showers and storms with it. Storms should start approaching College Station just after midnight… Houston around 3 am… Galveston around 4-5 am.

As the storms move south, they should become a little less widespread and more scattered so there is a chance you will miss out on this rain. We could see an isolated shower or two through the late morning or early afternoon Monday but most of us will be dry by the afternoon hours.

The downside to this rain is the chance for an isolated strong to severe storm in our northern counties. Conroe, Brenham, Huntsville, and Livingston are included in this risk. Overall it is on the lowest end of the severe risk spectrum. If we see a severe storm, the main threat will most likely be damaging wind gusts. We cannot completely rule out small hail and an isolated tornado but chances are low.

Overall the highest chances for rain will be before most of us get up Monday morning but an isolated storm or two cannot be ruled out through the morning. Rain chances drop to 10% after the noon hour.

What are the rain chances for next week?
A weak front will approach us Monday to bring a 60% chance of scattered downpours to Houston. A couple of storms north of Houston could bring strong, gusty winds. The front will weaken as it heads to Houston, so we won’t feel much of a change. Isolated, afternoon storms will be possible Tuesday & Wednesday but most of us will stay dry. Rain chances increase Thursday and Friday as moisture gets pulled in from Tropical Storm Pamela in the Pacific (Pamela is expected to make landfall as a hurricane on the western coast of Mexico midweek and that moisture will be pushed our way) Another cold front is expected to move in on Friday and this front will bring in some drier and cooler weather to Southeast Texas for next weekend.

Is there anything of concern in the tropics?

At this time, no. Texas is normally done with hurricane season by mid October as the steering currents shift and push fronts into the state instead of tropical weather systems. We will be monitoring the Pacific for storms and hurricanes that can enhance the moisture over Texas like Tropical Storm Pamela.
