Strong fall front to bring end to near record heat

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — We have to endure three more days of summer-like heat before fall fresh air returns.

It will stay unseasonably warm Wednesday morning with lows only in the mid 70s. Houston averages a low of 62 degrees this time of year. All that sticky air will lead to another hot and humid afternoon with highs near 90 and heat index values near 100. Moisture from Pacific storm Pamela will move through the state, but we have less than a 20% chance of getting any rain Wednesday. Our best chance of rain from Pamela’s remnants will come Thursday.

What are the rain chances for the rest of week?
They’ll increase to 40% Thursday as moisture gets pulled in from Tropical Storm Pamela in the Pacific. Pamela is expected to make landfall as a hurricane on the western coast of Mexico sometime Wednesday, and that moisture will blow across Texas Wednesday and Thursday. Our strongest cold front since April is expected to move in Friday evening, and this front will bring in significantly drier and cooler weather to Southeast Texas for next weekend. There’s only a 20% chance of rain with the front, and then we’ll be sunny and dry into early next week.

How cool will it get behind the front?
We expect high temperatures in the 70s this weekend with lows in the 50s.

Is there anything of concern in the tropics?

Texas is normally done with hurricane season by mid October, but we are monitoring Pacific storm Pamela that could bring flooding rains to parts of Texas later this week. You can get a full overview of the tropics on our tropical update page.
