Man accused of killing driver who honked horn in Pleasant Grove parking lot, Dallas police say

A 21-year-old man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of fatally shooting a man in May during a dispute in a Pleasant Grove parking lot.

Luis Martinez faces a murder charge in the death of Harvey Hughes, who was shot May 16 in the 2100 block of North Masters Drive, near Bruton and Lake June roads.

A woman who was in Hughes’ car told police he was driving in a parking lot when a dark-colored pickup stopped in front of them, according to an arrest-warrant affidavit.

Hughes honked his horn and drove toward the exit, according to the woman, and the vehicles ended up side-by-side. Hughes got out of his car and began arguing with the other driver, the woman told authorities.

The woman told Hughes to get back in the car, and he did. But as the other driver turned out of the parking lot, he shot at the car several times with a handgun, the affidavit says.

Hughes was struck several times, and the woman was hit on the face with bullet fragments. Hughes died at a hospital May 25.

Authorities said another witness identified Martinez as the gunman and said he told her that he fired his gun after seeing Hughes open his trunk.

Martinez, who also faces a charge of aggravated assault, remained in jail Thursday. His bail is set at $300,000.
