Man accused in South Dallas slaying after fight over drugs, police say

A man faces a murder charge after Dallas police say he fatally shot someone during a fight on Halloween.

Kevontre Jawauna Jones, 28, is accused of killing Jasmond Sanchez about 7 p.m. Sunday in the 2700 block of Coombs Street, near Al Lipscomb Way and South Malcolm X Boulevard in South Dallas.

According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, Sanchez and Jones were fighting before Jones shot Sanchez several times. Sanchez was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police said Jones fled in a car with a juvenile and drove into downtown Dallas, where he called 911 to report the shooting.

According to the affidavit, Jones told detective that Sanchez walked to his car and tried forcing the door open before punching him in the head several times. Jones told police that, fearing for his life, he shot Sanchez several times in the head and body. He told detectives he did not leave his car, according to the affidavit, and initially said he didn’t know Sanchez.

But both Jones’ and Sanchez’s mothers said the two were friends and had known each other for years, a detective wrote in the affidavit. Sanchez’s mother said the pair recently had a falling out and that Jones had threatened her son’s life on several occasions.

In a follow-up interview, Jones admitting knowing Sanchez and said the pair had been fighting over drugs, according to affidavit.

Jones was arrested Monday morning, hours after the shooting. He remained in custody Thursday, at the Dallas County jail, where he’s also being held on a drug-possession warrant. His bail is set at $250,500.
