A McKinney man faces a murder charge after allegedly shooting his wife by accident Sunday afternoon, police said.

McKinney police were dispatched about 1 p.m. Sunday to a house in the 4600 block of Kingsway Lane, near Hardin Boulevard and the Sam Rayburn Tollway, after a 911 caller said he accidentally shot his wife while trying to “clear” his gun inside the home.

The woman, Shailene Velez, 21, was pronounced dead by first responders.

McKinney police arrested 22-year-old Joel Torres. He was in the Collin County jail in lieu of $200,000 bail on Monday. It was unclear if he had an attorney.
