Traffic accident in Irving that killed infant not being investigated as hit-and-run, police say

Police are still looking for the person who fatally struck a baby girl Sunday morning after she fell out of a car in Irving, but investigators say they are not yet treating the incident as a hit-and-run.

“We honestly don’t think that the person who ran over the child knows,” police spokesman Robert Reeves said during a news conference Monday.

He said the 8-month-old girl fell out of the back right door of a moving car about 10:30 a.m. and was hit by a black sedan near North MacArthur Boulevard and Ranchview Drive. The child was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Besides the infant, other children — ages 6, 3 and 2 — were in the car that was being driven by their mother, Reeves said. Although there were two safety seats in the car, police do not think any of the children had been secured in them or wearing seat belts.

Reeves said Child Protective Services was called. The mother’s name was not released.

The driver of the second vehicle did not stop after the accident, but Reeves said investigators do not think the driver realized the child was struck.

“We do not believe there was any malicious intent,” police spokesman Robert Reeves said during a news conference Monday.

Investigators are working to determine how the child fell out of the car and are asking for the public’s help to find the motorist who hit her.

Reeves said other drivers who witnessed the accident called 911, and one person tried to perform lifesaving measures on the baby, Reeves said.

Anyone with information about the case may call police at 972-721-2761.
