SWAT standoff at Old East Dallas motel ends after barricaded person kills himself, police say

The person who barricaded himself in an Old East Dallas motel on Christmas morning has died of a self-inflcted gunshot after SWAT personnel negotiated with him for about five hours, police say.

When law enforcement was unable to re-establish contact with him, they entered the room and found him dead.

Shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday, Dallas Fire-Rescue was called to conduct a welfare check at the motel along East R.L. Thornton Freeway, near Dolphin Road.

When Dallas Fire-Rescue personnel tried to get into the room, they heard what sounded like a gunshot and called police.

No other people were believed to be in the room.

Police did not provide details about what led to the request for a welfare check, and the person who was involved has not been identified.
