Shooting victim saved by jacket after jeans sale goes wrong, Haltom City police say

A Dallas resident was saved by their jacket Friday night after being shot at while trying to buy pants in Haltom City.

The victim drove to an apartment complex in the 5600 block of Coventry Park Drive about 11:30 p.m. to buy some “expensive jeans” that had been listed on the online marketplace OfferUp, Haltom City police said, despite being suspicious about the transaction taking place at a late hour.

The sale went sideways after the seller approached the victim’s car and the jeans were not as advertised, police said. As the victim started driving off, the seller pulled out a pistol and started shooting.

One of the bullets fired at the victim’s vehicle lodged into their jacket but had “luckily lost enough velocity” to only bruise them, police said.

Authorities did not say whether anyone had been arrested.

Authorities and marketplaces such as OfferUp say buyers and sellers should take precautions when meeting up, including meeting in busy, well-lit public places and calling 911 if they feel that they’re in danger.
