Small hail, rain pummel North Texas as storms move east of D-FW

Wind, hail and rain hit North Texas Monday afternoon and into the evening as a surge of thunderstorms rolled through the area.

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth issued a severe thunderstorm warning for parts of Collin, Dallas, Hunt and Rockwall Counties until 8:15 p.m. A severe thunderstorm watch was also in effect for parts of North Texas until 10 p.m. Monday.

The weather service advised people to monitor the forecast and prepare to take action if a severe weather warning or watch is issued.

The bulk of the storm activity will move east after midnight, the weather service said, and a few showers could remain in the northeastern counties. Some storms could produce small hail, the weather service said.

KXAS-TV (NBC5) meteorologist Brian James said the storms should dry up by late Monday, about 11 p.m., leaving behind temperatures in the 40s overnight.

Temperatures will warm up to the high 70s and low 80s by midweek, and a chance of rain is likely again on Thursday, James said.

“We’ll have to be weather aware,” he said. “In D-FW, we’re going to watch for where the thunderstorms develop, but it’s most likely going to be a bit further off to the east.”

Here’s what NBC5′s latest forecast says:

Monday: 73/46. Mostly cloudy through the morning, then partly cloudy, windy, and warmer. A 20% chance of thunderstorms by evening, mostly east of Dallas.

Tuesday: 69/46. Sunny and a bit cooler.

Wednesday: 79/45. Mostly sunny and warmer.

Thursday: 82/55. Partly cloudy, warm and windy. A 30% chance of late-day thunderstorms.

Friday: 68/48. Partly cloudy and cooler.

Saturday: 72/43. Partly cloudy and mild.

Sunday: 77/46. Sunny, breezy and warmer.
