Man arrested on suspicion of driving 157 mph before deadly crash on I-20, Fort Worth police say

A 22-year-old Arlington man was arrested on suspicion of driving more than 150 mph before a crash that killed a teenager and injured two other people on Interstate 20 earlier this month, Fort Worth police say.

Bryce Keith Abernathy faces a charge of manslaughter and two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the March 15 collision, police said. He was booked into the Tarrant County jail Wednesday, and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.

Abernathy is suspected of driving 157 mph in a 70-mph zone about 11 p.m. March 15 on I-20 near McCart Avenue, where he crashed into an SUV, killing Shaundi Smallwood, 19, and injuring two passengers, police said.

Police did not release the conditions of the two passengers or any additional details.

Abernathy was released from custody Thursday on $80,000 bond, jail records show.

Smallwood had traveled with friends to Six Flags Over Arlington before the crash, his relatives told KXAS-TV (NBC5). Stephenie Smallwood, his mother, told the station that he was passionate about music and singing, adding that she’d “never thought I would have to bury any of my children.”
