2 firefighters injured in fire at senior-living facility in Far East Dallas

Two firefighters were hospitalized after responding to a fire Thursday evening at a senior-living facility in Far East Dallas.

The fire broke out about 6:30 p.m. at Lakeland Hills Senior Living in the 3300 block of Dilido Road, near John West Road. Smoke was seen coming out of the second floor of the three-story building when firefighters arrived, said Jason Evans, a Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman.

About 120 firefighters were still battling the blaze two hours later, Evans said.

The injuries the firefighters sustained were not life-threatening, and both were expected to be OK, he said.

No injuries had been reported among residents, Evans said.

At least 10 ambulances were on scene to help get residents away from the smoke, a battalion chief on the scene told KXAS-TV (NBC5).

A temporary evacuation center was set up at the Samuell-Grand Recreation Center, KTVT-TV (Channel 11) reported, and the city’s Office of Emergency Management was working to find residents more permanent housing.

The property manager told WFAA-TV (Channel 8) that some residents were being taken to an American Red Cross shelter and others were opting to stay with family.

A WFAA reporter noted that the smoke was thick in the air and that some residents were having trouble breathing outside the building.

“It was just basically saying to myself, ‘Gwen, you better get out of here because this isn’t looking good.’ Because the smoke kept getting worse and worse and worse,” resident Gwenn Woodard told KDFW-TV (Channel 4).

It’s not clear yet what caused the fire, Evans said.
