23 people injured by tornadoes, storms in Central Texas

More than 20 people were injured Tuesday night when tornadoes ripped through Central Texas and caused widespread damage, authorities said.

Twenty-three people were injured in several tornadoes confirmed by the National Weather Service that touched down in Bell County, County Judge David Blackburn said at a news conference Tuesday night. Blackburn said of the injured, 12 were taken to hospitals and one person was in critical condition.

Bell County is about 150 miles south of Dallas.

Heavy property damage was reported in rural areas of the county after a tornado was confirmed by spotters around 7:30 p.m

“There’s not much left,” Blackburn said at the new conference. “Large trees are uprooted and overturned and stripped. Buildings really reduced to rubble. … Power lines, power poles, are scattered all over the place. It’s pretty devastating.”

Social media posts captured more than 5-inch diameter hail — about the size of a grapefruit — during the storm, which was part of a system that extended from Austin to Dallas-Fort Worth.

A slight chance of thunderstorms remains Friday through Monday, and North and Central Texas will remain under a “hazardous weather outlook” through the weekend, the weather service said.
