Atmos Energy customers in North Texas report smelling gas Thursday after company over-odorized lines

Residents in several cities across North Texas reported smelling natural gas Thursday after Atmos Energy workers over-odorized some gas lines, authorities in multiple cities said.

By around 9:40 p.m., authorities from departments in Keller, Southlake, Coppell and Flower Mound said they had been in contact with Atmos and that there was no threat to the public.

Southlake police said on Twitter that the company told them it had used too much mercaptan — a type of strong-smelling gas that’s added to natural gas to make it easier to detect — at a site in Justin in Denton County.

An Atmos spokesperson told KTVT-TV (Channel 11) that there were no orders to evacuate.

“The safety of the public, our employees and our system is our highest priority, and we want to thank local Fire Departments and Denton County Emergency Services for their support and the residents who did the right thing by calling our emergency number,” the spokesperson told the outlet. “We are responding to every odor call and will continue to do so as part of our vision to be the safest provider of natural gas services.”

There have been no reported injuries. Police departments inmultiple cities said they would continue to respond to calls about possible gas leaks.

If people suspect there is a gas leak in their home, they should evacuate immediately and call 911. Atmos Energy customers can also report leaks to 866-322-8667.
