Chance of thunderstorms returns Saturday, increases through Monday

The chance of showers and potentially severe storms returns Saturday night and will increase through Monday, producing heavy rain, along with the potential for hail and gusty winds.

The National Weather Service said scattered thunderstorms are possible Saturday night across western North Texas, including Dallas and Fort Worth. While the threat for severe weather is low, the weather service said there could also be hail and damaging winds.

Low temperatures will be in the 60s with breezy winds overnight, the forecast says.

Storms chances will increase Sunday as a cold front approaches North Texas, the weather service said. Heavy rain is expected through Monday.

The weather service said the greatest threat from the storms will be heavy rainfall and possible flooding.

KXAS-TV (NBC5) meteorologist Wes Houx said there’s a “marginal risk” for severe weather in Dallas-Fort Worth, but “not zero.”

“The best news out of all of this is really going to be the rainfall totals that we get helping etch away at some of those drought conditions we’ve been experiencing,” Houx said.

Between 1 and 3 inches of rain is expected in Dallas-Fort Worth, he said; areas to the northwest may see 2 to 3 inches.

Temperatures will gradually warm next week, topping off in the low 90s by Friday, the weather service said.

Here’s what NBC5′s latest forecast says:

Saturday: 84/68. Mostly cloudy and windy.

Sunday: 79/68. Mostly cloudy and windy, with an 80% chance of scattered thunderstorms, mainly late in the day and at night.

Monday: 69/62. An 80% chance of morning showers, otherwise cloudy and cooler.

Tuesday: 75/52. Mostly sunny and milder.

Wednesday: 78/54. Mostly sunny and breezy.
