Small rain chances return this weekend

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Gulf moisture is returning, and that’s the first step to getting more rain to help push back the drought.

Friday will be humid but dry as the Gulf breeze continues to push moisture levels higher. Temperatures will start off in the upper 60s around sunrise then warm into the mid 80s during the afternoon.

What is in store for the weekend?
Both days of the weekend will be warm, windy, and humid. Low temperatures will bottom out in the low 70s with high temperatures pushing close to 90. There will be a mix of clouds and sunshine, so protect yourself from the sun to avoid getting a sunburn. Late Saturday there could be a few thunderstorms north of Houston from College Station to Huntsville to Livingston. These will fire up along a weak front that should stall out well north of Houston, keeping the Bayou City mostly dry. On Sunday there’s another small chance for rain as a jet stream disturbance begins to move through the state. Your chance of rain both days is just 20%.

Are there any other chances for rain?
The jet stream disturbance that enters the state on Sunday will glide to our north on Monday. If it does track to our north Monday, our rain chance will remain low at 20%. If it happens to track farther south, then our chance for rain will go up, and there could even be a few severe thunderstorms. After Monday, the next hope for rain will depend on another weak front coming into Texas. The current outlook is mixed on whether or not it gets close enough to Houston to bring us any rain.

How did Monday’s rain impact the drought?

Drought conditions improved north of I-10 where the most rain fell. We actually saw the drought worsen southwest of Houston where the least rain fell. At the same time, almost everyone got enough rain to end any local burn bans. Jackson County is the lone holdout with a burn ban still in effect.
