Plano police investigating after shootout involving off-duty officer

PLANO — Plano police are investigating after an off-duty police officer fired at another man at a 7-Eleven on Wednesday.

About 4:30 p.m., a man inside the convenience store at the corner of 14th Street and Shiloh Road got into an argument with a clerk. He then went outside to get a handgun from his car, said Detective Jerry Minton, a police spokesman.

Minton said an off-duty officer was inside the store and saw the man grab a gun.

The officer, whose name was not released, then drew his weapon and the two men fired at each other multiple times, Minton said.

When officers arrived, they ordered the first man to drop his weapon, and he complied. Responding officers recognized the off-duty officer, and he immediately put his weapon away, Minton said.

No one was injured in the shooting, but Minton said there were “quite a bit of rounds” that went across the street, resulting in a large crime scene.

The gunman, whose name was not released, was taken into custody. A second person was detained for questioning, Minton said.

Minton said criminal and internal investigations into the incident will be conducted. He did not say how long the officer had been with the department or whether he would be placed on administrative leave.

The intersection of 14th Street and Shiloh Road will be closed for “an undetermined amount of time” because of the shooting, the department said.

More than a dozen police cars were at a 7-Eleven at about 6:30 p.m. The 7-Eleven and a Shell gas station across the street were closed off with crime scene tape. A handgun was lying on a sidewalk outside the 7-Eleven, and a window next to the Shell entrance was shattered.

Minton said police were continuing to gather information about the incident.
