Man who killed self outside Lockheed Martin identified as employee on leave

The Tarrant County medical examiner’s office has identified the man who fatally shot himself last week outside of Lockheed Martin on the White Settlement-Fort Worth city line.

Richard Lynn Bains, 62, died by suicide, the medical examiner’s office said.

A Lockheed Martin spokesman told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that Bains was an employee on administrative leave at the time of his death May 19. The spokesman did not provide any other details.

Officers responded around 5:30 a.m. to the offices at 1 Lockheed Blvd. Police previously said Bains appeared to be in distress and asked to speak with someone with the FBI.

Bains was holding a shotgun, and turned it on himself as officers urged him not to use it. No one else was injured.

White Settlement police Chief Christopher Cook told the Star-Telegram that Bains had been put on leave from the company about eight months ago.

Authorities locked down the area that morning “based upon comments the suspect made prior to the shooting” and to investigate a “suspicious device” in Bains’ car, Cook said.

No explosives or additional threats were found after bomb technicians examined the car.

Lockheed Martin is a global security and aerospace company headquartered in Maryland. The Fort Worth location primarily manufactures F-35 combat aircraft and employs more than 18,000 people.
