Here’s your holiday weekend forecast

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Our much needed holiday weekend is here, and the forecast is filled with sunshine and an air quality alert.

Overnight the sky will remain mostly clear with temperatures dropping into the low 70s south of Houston. Dry air northeast of Houston will allow temperatures to drop closer to 60-degrees. Most in Houston can expect low temperatures in the upper 60s and lower 70s.

Temperatures will heat back up into the mid 90s Saturday afternoon, and the combination of hot temperatures, sunshine, and light winds will allow ozone pollution to reach unhealthy levels in some Houston area neighborhoods. Ozone is a lung irritant that can trigger asthma attacks in sensitive individuals. The air quality should improve quickly after sunset.

What are we expecting for for the rest of Memorial Day weekend?
The sunshine continues Sunday with a partly cloudy sky returning by Memorial Day. You’ll notice the humidity levels increasing Sunday and Monday as a stronger Gulf breeze kicks in. This will improve the air quality and drop high temperatures closer to 90. It should remain rain-free.

When could we get more rain?

A heat ridge settling in overhead will keep it mostly dry over the next 10 days but there are some glimmers of hope for needed rainfall. The sea breeze front that comes in from the Gulf during the afternoon hours could trigger a shower or thunderstorm Tuesday and Wednesday. Then next Friday a weak front will get close enough to bring us another 20% chance for showers and thunderstorms. These rain chance are minor, so don’t get your hopes up too much just yet.

Is there anything worth watching in the tropics?

We are keeping an eye on a developing tropical system in the Pacific expected to become Tropical Storm Agatha. We continue to see a signal that this storm will turn northeast into Mexico, potentially as a hurricane, and then emerge in the Gulf of Mexico during the first few days of June. It’s no real concern to us right now, but you can learn more about it in our daily tropical update.
