Humidity returning, plus a small chance for rain on Memorial Day

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — A strengthening Gulf breeze is bringing higher humidity back to Houston.

Temperatures this morning are only dropping in to the mid 70s because of the muggier air, but the flip side is we get lower highs Sunday afternoon. It will still heat up into the low 90s. You can expect peak wind speeds up to 20 mph.

What are we expecting for Memorial Day?
It now looks like enough moisture will return to bring in a 20% chance for a later afternoon shower on the holiday. The Gulf breeze will get even stronger allowing even higher humidity and more clouds to return. Temperatures will only cool off into the upper 70s in the morning then peak around 90 in the afternoon. The sea breeze front that rolls in from the Gulf of Mexico will bring that small chance for isolated showers late in the day.

When could we get more rain?
A heat ridge settling in overhead will keep it mostly dry over the next 10 days but there are some glimmers of hope for needed rainfall. The sea breeze front that comes in from the Gulf during the afternoon hours could trigger a shower or thunderstorm again on Tuesday and Wednesday. Then on Friday a weak front will get close enough to bring us another 20% chance for showers and thunderstorms. These rain chances are minor, so don’t get your hopes up too much just yet.

Is there anything worth watching in the tropics?
We are keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Agatha in the Pacific. It is expected to make landfall in Mexico, potentially as a category 2 hurricane, and then emerge in the Gulf of Mexico during the first few days of June. It’s no real concern to us right now, but you can learn more about it in our daily tropical update.
