A strong Gulf breeze brings back a small chance for rain on Memorial Day

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Memorial Day brings back an ever so small chance for a rain shower as a strong south breeze transports in moisture from the Gulf.

The atmosphere should be too stable to produce any thunderstorms, but isolated showers are possible from the late morning to the late afternoon.

Temperatures are starting this morning in the upper 70s because of the humid air and steady breeze. The strong wind will help to keep high temperatures close to 90 under a partly cloudy sky. Peak wind gusts will top out around 30 mph.
Are there any other chances for rain this week?
Yes, but don’t get your hopes too high. A heat ridge settling in overhead will keep it mostly dry over the next 10 days but there are some glimmers of hope for needed rainfall. The sea breeze front that comes in from the Gulf during the afternoon hours could trigger a shower or thunderstorm again on Tuesday. Then on Friday a weak front will get close enough to bring us another 20% chance for showers and thunderstorms. Most of us are unlikely to get a drop of rain over the next 10 days, so you’ll probably need to start watering again as we get further away from last week’s beneficial rains.
Is there anything worth watching in the tropics?
We are keeping an eye on Hurricane Agatha in the Pacific. It is expected to make landfall in Mexico as a category 3 hurricane on Monday then emerge in the Gulf of Mexico during the first few days of June. It’s no real concern to us right now, but it could bring widespread tropical rains to South Florida and the Bahamas. You can learn more about it in our daily tropical update.
