Garland officers kill man who fatally shot bail bondsman, police say

Garland officers killed a man who fatally shot a bail bondsman Thursday evening, police said.

Officers were called about 7:30 p.m. to a motel in the 6200 block of Broadway Boulevard, near Interstate 30, where employees of a bail bond company were serving a warrant for multiple accounts of sexual assault of a child.

One of the bondsmen was shot by the suspect inside a motel room, said Lt. Pedro Barineau, a police spokesman.

Multiple police officers fired at the suspect, killing him, Barineau said. Police identified the suspect Friday as 33-year-old Juan Carlos Lopez of Little Elm.

The bail bondsman was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. His identity is pending next-of-kin notification.

No one else was wounded, Barineau said. The three officers involved in the incident will be placed on paid administrative leave, he said.

Barineau said the investigation was active and “very complicated,” and that authorities were speaking to a number of witnesses and reviewing body-camera footage.
