Sizzling for Father’s Day, potential for historic heatwave next week

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Make sure Dad has a cool spot to chill today.

We’re starting off with temperatures in the upper 70s and will warm into triple-digit-territory during the afternoon under a mostly sunny sky. Like we’ve seen the past couple of days, we’ll see a few isolated showers and storms, but we’re keeping rain chances at just 20%. Ozone pollution could reach unhealthy levels in some neighborhoods Sunday afternoon, so an Ozone Pollution Watch is in effect.

For as hot as it’s going to be on Father’s Day, it looks to be several degrees hotter by next week.

If it’s heating up that much next weekend, how high will the heat index get?
Great question! In order for temperatures in Houston to get to 105 (or hotter) the air must be very dry. Dew points usually drop into the 50s, and that actually makes the heat index read lower than the actual temperature. So assuming we do get that hot next weekend, it will feel more like an oven than a sauna.

What’s the hottest temperature ever recorded in Houston in June?
The hottest June temperature ever recorded in Houston is 107F on the 29th in 2013.

Are there any other chances for rain?
Rain will be tough to come by in this weather pattern. A massive heat ridge will sit overhead or nearby for the next 10 days, keeping rain chances well below 20% most days.

Is there anything worth watching in the tropics?
While no development is expected over the next five days, long range indications suggest we could see our first development from a tropical wave deep in the Atlantic the last few days of June. You can stay informed on everything happening in the tropics all season long with our daily tropical update.
