Fort Worth police officer injured in crash with suspected intoxicated driver

A Fort Worth police officer was hospitalized Friday night after a driver suspected of being intoxicated struck a patrol vehicle.

The officer was helping a stranded motorist in a southbound traffic lane on the Lake Worth Bridge, near Northwest Loop 820 and Cahoba Drive, about 8 p.m. Police said the officer was behind the disabled vehicle in a patrol car that had its emergency lights on to alert other drivers to the lane closure.

A pickup struck the back of the patrol vehicle, sending it across four lanes of traffic and into a concrete barrier. The police car also hit a passing vehicle.

Police said the officer was taken to a hospital, and their condition was not known. The passing driver was not injured.

The pickup’s driver also was taken to a hospital in unknown condition. Police said charges will be filed if they determine the driver was intoxicated.

Authorities did not release the names of the officer or the pickup’s driver.
