A plastics manufacturer will pay Grand Prairie $200,000 to help with expenses related to a massive industrial fire at its plant in 2020.
Fire broke out at Poly-America in August 2020, burning for 23 hours before firefighters from Grand Prairie and surrounding cities managed to extinguish it.
Grand Prairie’s tab exceeded $235,000, according to city documents, including $130,748 in mutual aid agreements with area departments.
In addition to Grand Prairie, firefighters from Dallas, Fort Worth, DFW International Airport, Irving, Joint Reserve Base, Duncanville and Cedar Hill responded to the fire.
Poly-America was unable to recover the losses from its insurance company, but offered the city $200,000 to settle the matter, the documents say.
Grand Prairie City Council on Tuesday approved the settlement, which the city called “fair and equitable.”
Poly-America produces trash bags and other plastic products and describes itself as “the most technologically advanced and largest recycler and compounder of polyethylene in the world,” on its website.
Many of the company’s products are made from polyethylene, which emergency responders have described as highly flammable.
