Officers fatally shoot armed patient at Irving hospital, police say

Officers fatally shot an armed patient in an Irving hospital emergency room Wednesday evening after the man fired at them, police said.

Irving police spokesman Robert Reeves said officers responded to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center at Irving, in the 1900 block of North McArthur Boulevard, about 8 p.m. after a nurse reported that a patient in the emergency room had a gun.

It’s unclear why the man — a 34-year-old whose name has not been released — had been admitted to the hospital.

A hospital officer and an Irving officer who was at the location for an unrelated reason confronted the man, who fired one round at them, KXAS-TV (NBC5) reported. He fired once more when additional officers arrived.

Several officers were in the room and shot back at the man, police said. It’s unclear how many officers were in the room, how many shots were fired at the patient or whether the man was in a hospital bed during the shooting.

Nearby rooms were occupied by patients, Reeves said, but no other injuries were reported.

The investigation is ongoing.
