Dallas-Fort Worth to start week off under excessive-heat warning

After a handful of days where high temperatures stayed in the 90s, North Texans will once again feel the heat.

The Dallas-Fort Worth area will be under an excessive heat warning Sunday and Monday, the National Weather Services in Fort Worth said Saturday. Temperatures are expected to climb to 105 to 108 degrees in counties where the warning is issued.

The latest forecast shows highs exceeding 100 degrees every day next week in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. The region is on track to have the most 100-degree days since 2013.

While scattered storms provided much-needed rain for some North Texans this week, no precipitation is in next week’s forecast.

Ways to avoid heat-related illnesses

People should take precautions while outside to avoid any heat-related illnesses. Ambulance service MedStar offers the following five hot-weather tips:

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water during the day, especially during strenuous activity. Sports drinks are also a good choice.
  • Ventilate: Stay where there is plenty of air circulating to keep your body cool. If you are indoors without air conditioning, open windows and use a fan.
  • Cover up: Wear light-colored and loose-fitting clothing to avoid absorbing the sun’s light and trapping heat. Wear a hat to shield yourself from the sun, but remove any items covering your head if you feel yourself getting warm, as they can trap heat.
  • Limit activity: Heatstroke can occur in less than an hour when you are participating in strenuous activity on a hot day. If you are getting hot or light-headed, stop and rest in a cool place out of the sun.
  • Check on loved ones: The elderly are especially vulnerable to heat-related emergencies and may not be aware of how hot it can get in their homes. Call on older friends and family members regularly to make sure they are OK.
