Record breaking heat Thursday but a slight chance of rain Friday

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — Get ready for another dangerously hot afternoon in SE Texas as temperatures soar to 100+. Heat index values are expected to hit 108 which is why the NWS has issued an areawide Heat Advisory until 8 pm Thursday.

Keep taking all necessary precautions if you work outdoors by staying hydrated and taking breaks indoors or in the shade.

Thursday afternoon-evening, a stray shower or storm may pop up as an upper air disturbance approaches from North Texas. This disturbance will bring a slightly better chance for rain on Friday and might just keep our high temperature below 100 for a day.

What do our rain chances look like with this disturbance?
Right now we think about 30%. The disturbance rotating around the heat ridge should combine with Gulf moisture in the afternoon to produce a few thunderstorms. The disturbance is gone on Saturday, but enough moisture remains to give us a 20% chance for measurable rain.

How about those rain chances for next week?
While record highs will continue to be challenged through Monday, the rest of next week will feature a 20%-30% chance for afternoon downpours. The heat ridge will slide to our north and allow a moist easterly flow to send weak disturbances our way.

Is there anything worth watching in the tropics?
Another large Saharan dust cloud is moving across the Atlantic Ocean. For the very latest check out our daily tropical update.
