Hot and steamy with a side of rain this week

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — It’s going to be a hot week, but we’ll see increasing chances for rain towards the end of the week as more moisture moves in.

Monday though will be hot with temperatures topping out near 100. Heat index values look to top out around 107 so you’ll want to take heat precautions if you are outdoors. An isolated shower or two may pop up Monday afternoon but chances are looking very slight at just a 10% chance.

How about those rain chances for next week?
While record highs could continue to be challenged through Monday, the rest of next week will feature a 20% to 40% chance for afternoon downpours. The heat ridge will slide to our east and allow ample moisture and weak disturbances from the Gulf to flow our way. This should bring a more typical summer-time pattern with highs in the mid-90s and that small chance for a daily afternoon thundershower. The chance of rain rises to 40% Friday and Saturday as a weak front pushes extra moisture our way.

Is there anything worth watching in the tropics?
Another large Saharan dust cloud is moving across the Atlantic Ocean, but there is also a large tropical wave emerging south of it. This kind of wave often paves the way for the next tropical wave to have room to develop. In other words, the tropics may start to get active again around the turn of the month.
