17-year-old behind bars in fatal shooting at central Oak Cliff gas station

A 17-year-old is behind bars in connection with a fatal shooting at a central Oak Cliff gas station in June.

Jeremy Wilson was booked into the Dallas County jail Thursday in the death of 43-year-old Cordney Dawson. He faces a charge of capital murder, with bail set at $500,000, and does not have an attorney listed in court records.

Shortly before 11 p.m. June 26, officers were called to the 100 block of West Ann Arbor Avenue, near Interstate 35E and Loop 12, where they found Dawson with a gunshot wound. Dallas Fire-Rescue took him to a hospital, where he died, police said.

According to an arrest-warrant affidavit, the incident started about 9:50 p.m. when Wilson, along with three other people, tried to get into the closed gas station during an employee’s shift change, but were “physically prevented” and told to use the night window.

Meanwhile, Dawson, who left his car running, was using the night window, the affidavit says. As Wilson and two others walked to Wilson’s car, the fourth suspect — whom police allege pulled the trigger — got into the driver’s seat of Dawson’s truck.

Dawson tried to open the passenger door, but it was locked, so he jumped into the truck bed and entered through the sunroof, according to the affidavit. He was fatally shot once he got inside, and the four suspects fled in Wilson’s car.

The affidavit says surveillance video showed Wilson speed off and run a stop sign.

After the footage was shared with the public, a person who knew the suspects identified them to police.

According to the affidavit, police determined Wilson and the gunman “collectively shot and killed” Dawson, while the other two were “merely present when everything happened.”

Officials did not immediately respond to a request for more information about the gunman.
