Man died in custody following ‘medical episode,’ Dallas County Sheriff’s Office says

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office on Monday said a 24-year-old man who was in custody died following what authorities described as a “medical episode.”

Shamond Lewis was arrested Sept. 22 and accused of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, the sheriff’s office said in a news release. Lewis was taken to a hospital the following day after a “medical episode,” and died seven days later, the sheriff’s office added.

Jasmyn Carter, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office, said the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office requested the Tarrant County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the death. She declined to say why Dallas County asked Tarrant County to handle the investigation or to provide any further details.
